The True Believer – A verse by verse study of Jude (Part 3)

Verses 8-12

“Likewise also filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disouted about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, the Lord rebuke thee. But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, they corrupt themselves. Woe unto them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Baalam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds: trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots.”

In these verses, Jude continues to warn the churches about the apostate teachers and their apostasy and is exposing the characteristics of these false teachers. In verse 8 he tells us about their mind. They are filthy dreamers. These are the ones whose conscience has been seared with a hot iron. Don’t forget that these men have “crept in unawares” into the churches. They are already there. They are already implementing their heresy and apostate teachings into the church, yet few to none even recognize it. Their thoughts are polluted and carnal. They lack the mind of Christ.

Beware of those who call themselves ministers, yet have no issue with someone around them taking God’s name in vain. These are men who call themselves ministers, yet they can laugh at the obscene and inappropriate jokes with the best of them. In today’s churches you hear too often of sexual misconduct on the part of the preacher or even hear about preachers leaving their wife to be with a lady from the church. These circumstances are ssickening to those who desire to serve God, yet it happens way too often, These situations are reality because the “false teacher” had a vile mind. He seemed fine at first. The church was perfectly ok with voting him in. He kept his vile mind under the radar so to speak. But Paul was not lying when he said “and be sure your sins will find you out.” Eventually the truth comes out. These false teachers will hide as they are creeping in unawares, but eventually the truth comes out and the entire church is affected. This is why it is important that we heed the warnings of Jude so that we can save ourselves and the church much heartache in the future.

Jude also tells us in verse 8 that they reject authority. They can’t stand for someone else to be in charge. Be aware, if you see a man calling himself a minister yet he has to have total control of everybody in the church, there is something wrong. There is a big difference between being in charge and being a dictator. God never called anyone to dictate His people. We are not rulers. A false teacher will always give in to the temptations of pride. Nobody is better than him. He must be better than everybody and must keep himself lifted up on his own pedestal in order to remind everyone of his exellence.

In the bottom of verse 8 and through verse 9  we find these false teachers scoffing at spiritual beings. They are attempting to acheieve what even the highest angel could not. In verse 9 they we find these false teachers trying to rebuke the Devil. Beware of men who think highly enough of themselves to rebuke the Devil. This is dangerous territory. Even Michael the archangel refused to bring an accusation against the Devil. What makes us think that we are spiritual enough to do so?

This might come as a shock to some, but man does not have the power, nor the authority to rebuke Satan. He is much more powerful than us and will bring us down. James tells us that the devils “believe and tremble” as well. You’re foolish if you think the Devil doesn’t believe in God. Just because you believe in God does not grant you the authority to rebuke the Devil. The Devil believes too. There are so many false teachers out there who are telling their congregations to “rebuke the sin in your life”  or to “rebuke Satan.” Beware if you hear this because it is an absolute sign of a false teacher. There is only one who has the power to rebuke the Devil and His name is Jesus Christ. It is at the name of Jesus that Satan will bow. It is at the name of Jesus that he will confess Jesus Christ as lord. Not at the name of some famous evangelist who couldn’t preach his way out of a wet paper bag.

In verse 10 Jude tells us that they are making foolish mistakes by mocking and ridiculing that which they know nothing about. They ridicule the teachings of the Bible. Jude tells us that they are speaking evil of things they know nothing about. Having no spiritual insight or guided conscience they can easily criticize things which they fancy themselves to know.

In verse 11 Jude speaks of the results of the apostate teachings. He first tells us that they have gone in the way of Cain. This is the way of hatred. Cain was guilty of murdering his brother which his envy led him to. Likewise these false teachers are guilty of murdering the souls of men with their apostate teachings. Then we find that they have ran greedily after the error of Baalam. Baalams error was an immoderate love of money. This is the source of their teaching and the true motivations of their hearts. They have no desire to help the church or the christian, their desire is to increase the quantity of their wallet. Finally Jude tells us that they have perished in the gainsayings of Core. These men contradicted as well as opposed the true ministers of Christ whom they would have kicked out in order to thrust themselves in. They reviled the true ministers of Christ and contradicted their doctrines. Their destruction was swift and sudden, just as the destruction of Core.

In verse 12 Jude teaches us that these false teachers are blemshed upon the fellowship of the church. They are filled with emptiness and instability. Jude compares them to clouds as there are many whiich have silently crept into the church unaware and infected the souls of man with apostate teachings. Their doctrines and false teaching have made it to be a dark and cloudy day.

It is imperative that as a true minister of Christ we learn identify these apostates and their teachings so that we can expose them thereby ridding the church of their false teachings. It is time that God’s people stepped up to the plate and started spending more time studying the Word of God instead of spending more time pleasing man. These false teachers are not trying to get in, they’re already here. Their teaching have already infected the church and we are seeing the results today of those apostate teachings. Heed the warning of Jude and learn to be a true minister.
