Don’t undermine your own abilities by comparing yourself to the expectation of society. Regardless of how hard you try, you can never please everybody. No matter how much money we make, we’ll still be poor to some and rich to others. No matter what vocation you choose, you’ll still not be successful enough for some people. We must stop trying to be what society thinks we should be, and start being what we feel that God wants us to be.
Just because you’re not a millionaire doesn’t mean you’re not rich. Just because you don’t have a high corporate position doesn’t mean you have no ambition in life. Just because you haven’t changed the world doesn’t mean you haven’t made an impact. Forget about what society considers being the “norm” and starting being yourself. We have this idea today that unless you are accepted by society you have no value. This is about as untrue as it gets. We’ve struggled with this issue in America for many generations. Just because everybody is not like you doesn’t make them wrong. I’ve met people on the street as well as leaders in the ministry that believe that anybody of a different mind is wrong. This is just not so.
People have different dreams in life. If everybody were electricians then who would frame the house? If everybody were lawyers then who would they represent? If everybody were doctors then there would be no patients. Without variety, life would be dull and boring. If we were all alike then life could not go on. There must be variety. Don’t disregard the value of a person simply because they are different or because they fail to meet the expectations of society.
Stop being scared to be yourself. Be who you feel God expects you to be. I am a huge fan of individualism. Don’t be scared to be yourself. For many years I patterned my preaching after another preacher instead of developing into who God wanted me to be. I found over the years that comparing my abilities to others only limited what I could do. Don’t be scared to break out of the box. Instead of trying to be the best at everything in life, just be the best at who God intended you to be. There will always be others who have better skills, make more money and have newer things, but there will never be another you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. Break apart from the expectations of society and be who God made you to be!
“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” – Psalms 139:14
