There are many benefits to being a Child of God. We have the provision of God, the power of God, and we have the Presence of God. These benefits are invaluable to us as a Christian. The problem we have too often is just letting God take control of our situation.
This is something we all struggle with. As individuals, we love to say how much we trust and love God, but when the rubber meets the road, we prefer to try to solve our own problems and issues without outside help. Unfortunately, this often includes the help of God. We will wait until we are at our wits end and have hit rock bottom before we seek the help of God, while He wants to help us from the beginning.
As humans, we experience so much conditional love in our lives that we are cautious of One who loves us unconditionally. There is not a problem that we have that He cannot take care of it. There is not a burden that we carry, that He can’t help us bear it. The old hymn says, “Take your burdens to the Lord and leave it there.” There is more truth in those few words than we often realize in this life.
Life would be so much easier if we just learned to place our trust in the Lord instead of the merit of our own hands. Left on our own, we will make an even bigger mess out of the situation than what was there to begin with. It is hard for us to place our trust in Him when everything is going wrong in our lives, but it is during these times that it is most important that we learn to trust Him. His resources far exceed ours and He can deal with the problem better than we can.
There is the story of an old farmer who was working in the field one day when a finely dressed business man approached him. The business man informed the old farmer that his car had broken down and that he needed to use a phone. The old farmer invited him to supper and said he could use the phone there at the house. As they approached the house, the farmer stopped at a certain tree and lifted his hands up in the air under one of the branches and stood there for a brief moment and then proceeded into the house to eat supper. After supper the business man was able to contact a tow truck to come to his car and was thanking the farmer for the wonderful meal. As he got ready to leave, the business man looked at the farmer and said, “Sir, I have but one question. Earlier before we came inside you stopped at the tree outside the door and held your hands in the air for a moment then took them down. What was the meaning of this?” The old farmer just smiled and replied, “Son that is my problem tree. Every morning I get up and go to work out in the fields and everyday brings me different problems and struggles. At the end of the day before I go inside I stop at the problem tree and hang my problems there until morning so that I can enjoy my evening with my family. The funny thing is, every morning they just seem to have disappeared.”
May we learn to take our problems to Jesus and let Him deal with them. He can give us the peace of mind and peaceful heart that we seek. Take your burdens to the Lord and leave it there!
